In a remarkable display of community activism, hundreds of parents have successfully advocated for safety improvements on a Derby road, highlighting the dangers posed by a crossing that they deemed unsafe for children. This collective effort has led to a significant development: the Derby City Council is now in the early stages of transforming the zebra crossing on Blenheim Drive in Allestree into a traffic lights crossing.
The road in question is a daily route for children attending Portway Infant School and Portway Junior School, located nearby. However, parents have long been concerned about the safety of this crossing, citing several issues. Firstly, they claim that some motorists often ignore the crossing when children are attempting to cross, and the surrounding parking situation adds to the challenge, making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate safely.
The situation had reached a critical point, with parents expressing their fears that an accident was imminent. A petition, signed by over 600 concerned individuals, played a pivotal role in bringing this issue to the forefront. One parent recounted a harrowing experience where a car nearly reversed into her child near the schools, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Derby City Council officials, in response to the petition and the concerns of residents and councillors, have committed to installing new traffic lights. However, they have not provided a specific timeframe for this project. A council spokesperson explained that the process involves multiple stages, including design finalization and equipment procurement, which can take several months.
Despite the positive outcome, petition organizer Dominika Walker emphasized the need for detailed plans, a delivery timetable, and a comprehensive solution that addresses the residents' concerns. She believes that a well-designed traffic light crossing will significantly enhance safety and instill confidence in both children and parents, especially during the busy school run periods.
The headteacher of Portway Infant School, Lisa McSherry, echoed these sentiments, sharing stories of near-misses and drivers' lack of awareness at the crossing. Allestree councillor Ged Potter, who has been actively campaigning for improvements, noted the overwhelming support for safety measures, with two petitions collectively gathering almost 1,500 signatures.
While the council has not yet introduced 'lollipop' traffic wardens, as suggested by parents, they have prioritized school crossing patrols for areas without formal pedestrian crossings.
