Onward – Fox’s AT Thru Hike – Day 97: A Journey of Resilience and Adventure
Today, Grey Fox awoke to the sun's rays at 5 am, ready to embark on another day of their Appalachian Trail (AT) through hike. With a newfound sense of caution, they meticulously checked their gear, ensuring nothing was forgotten. The climb out of town was manageable, and the excitement of entering Vermont marked a significant milestone, with only three states left to conquer.
The Vermont landscape offered a refreshing change, featuring numerous beaver ponds and bogs. Grey Fox was relieved to have avoided the notorious mud, a common challenge on the trail. As they ventured onto a forest road, a chance encounter with a fellow thru hiker, Rando, led to a delightful surprise.
Bacon Wrap, a trail angel, was serving up trail magic in the form of a delicious cheese omelet. Grey Fox's preference for protein-rich meals was satisfied, and they savored the omelet, knowing their body needed it. The combination of a recent zero-mileage day and knee braces seemed to have worked wonders, as today's hike was remarkably pain-free.
Grey Fox's daily routine included a hearty breakfast of oatmeal and yogurt, followed by a variety of snacks throughout the day. Dinner consisted of simple yet satisfying taters and cheese. The journey's highlights included meeting fellow hikers, enjoying the changing scenery, and the occasional trail magic, like the omelet provided by Bacon Wrap.
One of the most notable aspects of Grey Fox's hike was their resilience. With 97 days without a ramen bomb, they had overcome the challenges of the trail and were grateful for the experience. The AT through hike was not just about the destination but also the journey and the sense of sanctuary it offered.
As Grey Fox continued their adventure, they reflected on the importance of taking each day as it comes, embracing the unknown, and finding comfort in the outdoors. The hike was a testament to their determination and a reminder that the journey is often more rewarding than the destination itself.
